This is a lovely Statue of Quan Yin standing on a rocky promontory. It is very large; it has delicate painted features all over her flowing robes. The detail is excellent. In this manifestation Quan Yin is the Goddess of the Southern Sea, the island is her throne, her place in the world. Her right hand is in a blessing gesture. She is serene in a violent sea. Her robes billow around her, the sea is rough. There is a sea serpent / dragon that is close to her feet, and snakes behind her. Her foot rests upon a lotus representing purity, and there is a lotus bud by her left side and she carries the jar of the elixir of life in her right hand. I think her features are Chinese and her hairstyle is Gandharan which harkens to her Indian roots.
Around her neck she wears three strands of pearls of wisdom.
This solid wood carving of Quan Yin is in excellent conditions, please look at the many photographs for the condition and composition of this serene Bodhisattva. Also known as a protector for fishermen and sailors, it is believed that if her name is called in an hour of danger that danger will pass
The Southern Sea mentioned in the title refers to a small rocky island off the south coast of
    India
called Potalaka, which is one of Avalokitesvara’s dwelling places on earth. In painting and sculpture, Kannon is often shown sitting on a rocky promontory which represents Potalaka holding a vase. The vase symbolizes harmony, and in Kannon’s hands is said to contain the dew of compassion. , stories are told of Quan Yin appearing at the bedside of the seriously ill and anointing them with a few drops of this nectar and they miraculously recover. Of the many forms and names of Quan Yin, one called Nankai Kannon (
    Japan
), “Southern Sea Kannon”, was worshipped by fishermen and sailors. The manifestation in this design was also call Shui yue Guanyin, “Water-Moon Kannon; two paintings of Guan Yin with these attributes, dating back as far as the tenth century, have been discovered at Dunhuang in the desert of Northwest China.
Sun Wukong visited Quan Yin in the Tidel-sound Cave of the southern sea in chapter 17 of the Xi you ji, “Journey to the West”,
And Guanyin figures prominently throughout the book.

Kuan Yin demands a reverence that no other God can command. Her purity is such that she is often compared to the Virgin Mary, she eclipses even Sakyamuni Buddha. She dispenses her favors liberally without need for recompense.
