Alexander Blazys Pair Of Asian Statues Authentic And Gorgeous. I purchased these fabulous figures directly from Alexander Blazys family, in Michigan. They are not signed, but do have numbers printed on the base. Alexander worked at the Cleveland Museum of Art and has pieces of his art displayed there. Blazys also worked with Cowan Pottery in Cleveland. He is best known for his statue of Moses.Alexander Blazys was born and schooled in Europe, exhibiting work in such venues as the Salon des Independants in Paris. He moved to the United States in 1923 working mainly on sculpture commissions, and settled in Cleveland, Ohio in 1925. He was head of the Cleveland School of Art from 1926-1938. He worked for Cowan Pottery ca. 1927 in ceramic design. He was awarded first prize for sculpture in the Cleveland Museum of Art May Shows of 1926, 1927 and 1928.
These American pieces are probably from 1925-1930. They are approx 17” tall x 10” wide. A man and a woman. He has a pink parasol and is wearing a blue kimono. She is wearing a purple and green kimono and is holding a fan. They are standing in front of stylized Asian trees. They are in wonderful condition. No chips, no cracks. There is some crazing. They each have a paint hole on the reverse side.
This pair is very pretty and in wonderful condition.
I have two more statues by Blazys. They are almost the same, but with different details, let me know if you are interested.
