From the 1950’s to 60’s the Newport R.I Mansions were vacant, unmanaged and slowly decaying. My uncle, who was the Newport neighborhood rebel, who later became a Harvard graduate, found that a jar of old skeleton keys would gain you access to these abandoned mansions making them great secret hangouts for him and his friends. The Marble House in particular was one of his favorites, with its run down Chinese tea house behind the home hugging the cliff walk. As the years passed and college become more important, they knew that someday the mansions would either become demolished or surrender to a series of hotels for the elite Newport visitors. So each house guest took home a souvenir left behind from the Vanderbilt Years. My uncle being the founder of the great secret hideout took home this trophy, a antique Chinese carved water buffalo statue which he found in the Alva and William Vanderbilt’s Chinese tea house. The peace dates from 1888 to1920’s and has very fine details that is intricately hand carved. Cut from one piece of wood, it is large and very impressive!MEASUREMENTS ARE 10 1/2” High x 24” Long x 10” Wide
Weighting in at 15lbs the Antique Asian carved piece was quite heavy, considering it was carefully moved from Newport RI to his Harvard dorm every semester.
