One Empress appears is holding an apple, a chines symbol of femine beauty and fertility. This figure has the Feng-Huang (phoenix) perched on her shoulder. The Fenghuang is one of the most powerful and dynamic symbols in Chinese mythology. Neither male or female, but often represnting feminine qualities of beauty and fertility.The other Empress figure is holding a pot, which is likely a planter for a small bamboo plant which these mythological birds were beleived to eat.
Both are in matching kneeling positions.
